On Field’s Nominalization of Physical Theories∗

چکیده
One of the most important questions of philosophy of mathematics is the ontological status of mathematical entities. In the late 70s, Quine and Putnam suggested an argument for the existence of mathematical entities. The argument is based on the idea that mathematics is not only applicable but in fact indispensable to empirical sciences; and if so, then mathematical entities are as indispensable from our best ontological picture of the world as electrons and other physical entities, to the existence of which physicists are committed. In it’s most explicit form the argument reads as follows.

Adding a Conditional to Kripke's Theory of Truth
Kripke’s theory of truth [29] has been very successful but shows wellknown expressive difficulties; recently, Field has proposed to overcome them by adding a new conditional connective to it. In Field’s theories, desirable conditional and truth-theoretic principles are validated that Kripke’s theory does not yield. Some authors, however, are dissatisfied with certain aspects of Field’s theories...
متن کاملLexical Annotation for Multi-word Entries Containing Nominalizations
New York University has produced a dictionary of nominalizations (NOMLEX) whose entries capture the relationship of the nominalization with its associated verb. This dictionary indicates where the verbal arguments may be found in the noun phrase which contains the nominalization. We have now made a study and produced some entries for nominalizations and their co-occurring verbs. These entries a...
متن کاملIntrinsic Explanation and Field’s Dispensabilist Strategy
Hartry Field defended the importance of his nominalist reformulation of Newtonian Gravitational Theory, as a response to the indispensability argument on the basis of a general principle of intrinsic explanation. In this paper, I argue that this principle is not sufficiently defensible, and can not do the work for which Field uses it. I argue first that the model for Field’s reformulation, Hilb...
متن کاملIntrinsic Explanation and Field’s Dispensabilist Strategy Sydney-Tilburg Conference on Reduction and the Special Sciences
Philosophy of mathematics for the last half-century has been dominated in one way or another by Quine’s indispensability argument. The argument alleges that our best scientific theory quantifies over, and thus commits us to, mathematical objects. In this paper, I present new considerations which undermine the most serious challenge to Quine’s argument, Hartry Field’s reformulation of Newtonian ...
متن کاملComparative Study of Nominalization in Applied Linguistics and Biology Books
This study explored nominalized expression types in an applied linguistics book and a biology book as 2 distinct disciplines. The books were carefully read, the nominalized expression types were identified, the frequencies of the nominalization types were counted, and eventually chi-square was administered. Results revealed no significant difference in using nominalization. Furthermore, the den...
